PEMCO Gets It: They don't care how much you know until they know how much you care
I listened to Rod Brooks (CMO at Pemco) talk about mentoring. He gets it. And he walks the talk. Below are his top 10 Key Observations and Take-Aways
1. The role of a mentor

- advocate
- challenge
- encourage
- support
- guide
- model (walk the talk)
2. Be secure in who you are
3. Don't feel like you always must have an answer
4. Stay informed and stay current
5. Always be positive and supportive
6. Do more asking than stating
7. Celebrate the joys and the sorrows with equal gusto
8. Don't be surprised by separation
9. Be there for them

Only in the short run, can you directly serve yourself
Wisdom from Robert Lane, the CEO of Deere as quoted by David Wessel of the WSJ at the 2010 Tuck School Commencement.
"Embrace the rich irony of business success. Apparent success, premature claims, appearances that later collapse. This is not success. Do not seek it. Do not claim it. The irony? The irony is you cannot, as a company or an individual, directly serve yourself if you are to create such lasting success. It’s impossible. You cannot generate enduring success for a great company or for yourself by acting as if ‘it’s all about me.’ Only in the short run, can you directly serve yourself. Only when others – customers, employees, shareholders, the environment – have been well served on a sustained basis – only then can you deem yourself a successful executive."

Effectiveness vs. Efficiency
Effectiveness vs. Efficiency
Often times we toss these words around as if they are synonymous in definition and implication, I know I have. I found a few insights from some articles and have compiled them here. In understanding the difference between effectiveness and efficiency, I believe we will practice both, better.
"Are you doing the right things? The key to effectiveness is that you’re doing things that lead to results in the realm of your responsibilities. Meanwhile the key to efficiency is getting your things done in a manner that consumes just the appropriate amount of energy and resources."

"I do not think that effectiveness and efficiency are mutually exclusive things. For a manager, they are both fundamental preconditions. Being effective means that one is able to properly analyze the evolving environment and selecting the right things as the areas of strategic focus for the enterprise. On the other hand, being efficient requires a carefully carved cultural and operational framework which helps the manager to achieve a particular degree of success, given the level of resources applied to a particular objective. In fact, it is fallacy to differentiate the two things as mutually exclusive. One can say that effectiveness is probably a thing that is more affected by the external environment. There will be inherent limitations to anyone's ability to keep on continually selecting the best objectives, given one's perceptions about the evolving strategic environment. Commitment of resources to a previously selected strategic objective also limits one's degree of freedom to keep on being effective on an eternal basis. On the other hand, being efficient is dependent upon the ability to adapt the internal operational environment by establishing a conducive operational culture. This is a relatively easier thing conceptually; however, it can be extremely hard to achieve in reality.
All said and done, a manager has to keep on striving to be both efficient and effective. That is his life!"

Well said Allen. You, I, we are human. And those kinds of statements really highlight what matter most. Each of us is born to do something and to do it very well, but that something will never be more important than each of us being a good husband, wife, father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, or friend.

"The best time spent is one invested in others"
What I have learned is that the most rewarding of feelings comes when time is spent invested in others. It's one thing to get a lot done and have a productive hour or day all about you ... it's another to truly mentor, coach, teach, train, help, listen to somebody else. While getting things done for yourself is a tremendously gratifying feeling, and is s simple reality, you will never quite feel fully satisfied with how you spend your time until you spend more time on behalf of someone else.

Be as creative as you can be
Creativity is not just an art and it's not just a science. It's both. I have found that to increase your propensity to be creative you should:
Read a lot (not just easy to read or "eye-candy" such as tweets but substantive material such as points of view, articles, books)
View a lot (observe others)
Listen a lot (listen to experts and non-experts)
Inquire a lot (ask questions)
Get involved in a lot (have multiple, diverse interests)
And you will be more creative.
What else could I add here?

Macro view, micro action
Lately, I have been around some amazing and innovative thinkers. Each one brings an uncanny ability to spew insights with ease on provocative and relevant topics. I can learn a boundless amount from them. It is interesting to note however that the biggest challenge of them is all is how to take macro-level thinking to the micro-action level. To truly translate big thoughts into tangible value-add items for society ....
